A few weeks back I went up to London with my friend and photographer buddy Jeff Turnbull. It was a day away, a chance to have a bite to eat, catch up, go to a gallery, and take a few photos around London etc. without the pressure of a normal shoot.
We didn’t set off until about 1100 AM at which we drove down to Redbridge and caught the tube up to Charring Cross, arriving about lunch time, (anytime is lunchtime for Jeff). What’s the first thing we saw when we came out of the station? McDonalds or should I say a McDonalds restaurant, well! we just had to do it didn’t we!!
So half an hour and a burger and chips later we set off to the National Portrait Gallery. There were two particular exhibitions we wanted to see an exhibition of Royal Portraits by Mario Testino and of course the 2013 Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition. I really liked the Testino works, they were images that I had not seen before and concentrated on Charles and Camilla, and William and Harry.
I had more mixed views on the Taylor Wessing exhibition; there was quite an eclectic mixture of work and in my view some broad differences in the quality and standard of the exhibits. There were some excellent pieces and equally quite a number which left me bemused and wondering how they ever got in. Strange really because I have been going to the exhibition for the past few years and this is the first time I felt like this.
Anyway……………
Time for a walk around some of the traditional tourist spots, Trafalgar Square, Horse Guards Parade, Downing Street, Houses of Parliament etc. etc. and on to Westminster Bridge and the South Bank.
By this time it was mid to late afternoon and it was beginning to get dark, just what I had been waiting for, armed with my trusty lightweight carbon fibre tripod and cable release it was time to start taking a few low light shots.
We shot these all the way along the South Bank up to the Millennium Bridge and back again, finishing off shooting some London bus light trails on Westminster Bridge.
I have produced a few shots from the day here, most of them low light shots but with a couple of others thrown in. I also had a little play with Topaz Labs in post-production, it’s a great little tool and I’m really pleased with the results.
