Wedding Photography at The Reid Rooms.

Why I Love This Image

This is a photograph I took of Bobbi, a bridesmaid at her mums wedding back in August 2015. The Reid Rooms is such an amazing wedding venue, I have photographed there on many occasions, and it’s full of charm and character with lots of interesting places to photograph.

This particular image was taken in many ways by chance, Bobbi had just walked down the staircase that you can see behind her and as she neared the bottom of the stairs I saw the soft natural daylight falling on her from the open front doorway nearby. Not being one to miss such a wonderful opportunity I asked her to sit on the stairs for a moment whilst I took the shot.

This was only a matter of minutes before the ceremony was due to begin and I could sense the happiness and excitement in her smile.

Bobbi is now planning to get married herself to her fiancé Adam in September next year, I’m very much looking forward to photographing their wedding.

 Essex Wedding Photography.

It was actually about two years ago when I was the wedding photographer for Sarah & Al’s amazing Essex wedding.

The wedding took place at the very beautiful Braintree Town Hall, which is fast becoming one of my favourite wedding venues.

When I arrived I met up with Al to take some portrait photos using the beautiful natural light and the features of the wonderful central staircase.

When Sarah arrived with her dad she looked absolutely stunning and her wedding dress well wow! Just look at the photos!

After the ceremony Sarah and Al left in Al’s pride & Joy his old Volkswagen Fastback. This was actually quite a treat for me too, because many years ago when I was actually living in Germany I had a Volkswagen Fastback too, though mine was bright orange rather than Al’s blue.

“Life is like a balloon if you never let yourself go, you’ll never know how far you can rise”

This is my latest offering in the image of the week category. It was taken at wedding last year in the north Essex village of Fyfield. There were a hundred red balloons in the church during the ceremony most of which were released outside afterwards. Some however were kept back to be taken on to the reception which was held in a huge marquee in the bride’s mother’s beautiful garden.

It was the responsibility of the three bridesmaids to take the balloons and I just happen to follow one of them as she crossed this bridge. I love this shot, I love the way the balloons are backlit by the sun and I love the shadow that is cast on the ground. It was right place right time and I had about 10 seconds to take the shot.

You can see the other two bridesmaids further ahead each with their own balloon collection.

Tasha & Karim’s Wedding at The Thames Motor Yacht Club.

Ok I have to say upfront this was one of my all-time favourite weddings to photograph. It was also one where I felt a bit more under pressure to do a fantastic job, the reason? Tasha (Natasha) is my Goddaughter and her parents Kev & Julie are very good friends. In fact Kev and I have known each other for over thirty five years having served together in the Royal Air Force. There always seems to be more pressure for some reason when I photograph a wedding of family and friends or else that of another photographer.

Pre wedding Photo Shoot

Tasha & Karim live in West Mosley in Surrey and I had been over to see them a couple of months previously to do a pre wedding photo shoot and to discuss their preferred wedding photography package. This was also an opportunity to get to know Karim a little better as I had only met him on one previous occasion. I had a brilliant afternoon with Tasha & Karim and their two sons Harrison and Logan, who were also to be page boys. We had a nice walk along the river bank and captured some nice shots.

I was very proud of Tasha, she looked amazing in her wedding dress, she has married a really nice guy and has two wonderful (if also a little bit cheeky) sons.

I wish them all the happiness in the world for many years to come.

The amazing wedding of Penny and Garry at Leez Priory

Leez Priory has to be one of the most prestigious wedding venues across the whole of Essex. It’s a stately Tudor mansion set in 40 acres of beautiful parkland and boasts a truly imposing presence. Leez Priory also has over twenty five years’ experience in providing perfect wedding services.

Leez Priory_Tony Sale Photography Follow Me on Pinterest

Penny and Garry’s Masquerade themed wedding at Leez Priory in Essex.

It’s always a great pleasure therefore for me to photograph a Leez Priory wedding, but that pleasure was even greater when the bride and groom were Penny and Garry. Why? I hear you ask; Well, although I don’t  know them well I have known them for a number of years, mainly through Penny’s parents, Dave and Carol and they have always seemed very nice,  friendly,  very happy and  well suited. What more I have always enjoyed their company.

I did in fact photograph Penny and Garry about a year prior to their wedding day at an event at the Colne Valley Golf Club. Gary later told me that they were so impressed at how amazing those photographs looked that they just had to book me to photograph their wedding.

The wedding was just before Christmas and Leez Priory looked wonderful decked out with Christmas lights, trees and decorations.  But, no matter how good the venue looked I’m afraid it was no match for the bride and groom, Penny and Garry, they looked stunning, truly amazing! The wedding had a masquerade theme, with everyone dressed in fine clothes or costumes and wearing traditional masquerade masks in a wonderful assortment of colours and styles.

The day was blessed with fine weather, pleasantly warm and with some bright winter sun.

The wedding was a sheer delight to photograph, I have produced a slide show of images below – enjoy!

The Essex Barn at Channels

Wedding photography at The Essex Barn at Channels Golf Club or to be more precise a winter wedding at the Essex Barn.

As often happens I get so busy photographing that I get a little behind in my blog posts and so here I am playing catch up again. This time featuring the Essex wedding of Nicola and Robert, or Nic and Rob as they are known to family and friends and which also happens to be the name of my two sons.

I did a pre wedding photo shoot with Nic and Rob some time back in the Braintree and Bocking Public Gardens, they are a lovely couple and we got some fantastic photos. It was nice therefore to meet up with them again on the big day itself.

The Essex Barn is a beautifully restored 17th century thatched ‘Essex Barn’ set in tranquil surroundings on the Clifford Estate just north of Chelmsford, on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Little Waltham. It’s a stunning wedding venue and it looked even more so for all of the festive Christmas trees and decorations which adorned the buildings.

Winter Wedding / Christmas Wedding

There really is something very special about photographing wedding during the winter months and especially during the Christmas period. There is something magical about Christmas trees, colourful decorations and roaring fires. I just love photographing weddings at this time of year.

I’m sure you will have seen photos of Holly and Chris before, I did a pre wedding photo shoot with them some months ago, at their home in rural Hertfordshire. We captured some beautiful images as we walked around their garden and the adjoining ancient woods.

They are such a wonderful couple and you can just tell by the way they look at each other and tease each other that they are so deeply in love. They actually met at work some years ago, they were both communications officers working for Essex Police in Braintree. I think it may have been during their deep and meaningful conversations on night shifts that their romance began to blossom. (or so I’m told anyway!)

I’m not sure when exactly but I know they both left the police service and went to live for a number of years in New Zealand, where Holly, amongst other things developed a very keen interest in photography.

It was a pleasure to share it with them and to provide the photographs that they may treasure forever.

The Societies

Like many wedding and portrait photographers I am extremely enthusiastic about training, developing my knowledge and skills, and also about keeping up to date with what’s happening in the photographic industry.

Last weekend was ‘The Societies’ annual conference and trade show, held at The Hilton Hotel on the Edgware Road and I went along for two whole days. It’s called ‘The Societies’ because it’s made up of a number of different societies representing different genres of photography, my particular strand is The ‘Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers’ or the ‘SWPP’

The first day I went was on the Sunday and it was primarily to look around the trade show, in particular I wanted to look at alternative web / image hosting sites SmugMug and Zenfolio. I have to say both of them are excellent products and the staff there were absolutely brilliant! – I ask a lot of questions and they were very knowledgeable and helpful.

I also had a god look at the GF Smith album stand, where again the guy I spoke to was extremely helpful. It was also interesting to see that one of their sample books was devoted to images of Nikki one of the models I photographed on my training weekend with Denton Photography back at the beginning of December.

It was also on this day that I met with a potential wedding client who is getting married in Hampton Court in August. Pleased to say we had a great chat (and some very nice coffee) and the booking was confirmed. A big thank you to Tasha and Karim.

One of Frank’s images of the model produced within just a few minutes.

In the afternoon I purchased a couple of strip soft boxes for a number of studio lighting projects I have in mind and also spent some time watching demonstrations by legendary Dutch photographer Frank Doorhof, who was quite amazing.

The second day was the Monday and this was a whole day 1000 AM – 4.00 PM with the absolutely brilliant Australian / Greek photographer Jerry Ghionis (one of the top ten wedding photographers in the world). I have to say it was a brilliant day but I nearly didn’t make it, as I drove down the M11 that morning it was snowing heavily and starting to settle, the traffic was crawling along really quite slowly and I was feeling terrible (had a dreadful cough and sore throat). More snow was expected during the day and I thought I may never get home (feeling a bit sorry for myself) On top of that it was a hire car and the low fuel warning light was flashing! (Ughh!). I came very close to just turning round and going back home, but… hey I didn’t, I soldiered on and got there just in time and so glad I did!

Jerry, Jerry Jerry!

Jerry is a very inspirational speaker / photographer and gave significant nuggets of information and advice throughout the day. I learnt a lot, made some (very untidy) notes and came away very inspired to try out a few new things.

Wow! What a romantic guy Ashley is, never met anyone like him! Do you know for the five days leading up to the wedding he sent Caitlyn a bouquet of flowers every single day. (You will see a great photo of them below).

Caitlyn and Ashley you may remember live in Braintree, I did a pre wedding photo shoot with them some weeks ago. Ashley’s parents live in Gosfield (very close to me) and it’s in their beautiful gardens that they held their wedding reception in a fantastic wedding marquee. The wedding ceremony itself was also held in the village at St Catherine’s Church.

The day started photographing the bridal prep, at Caitlyn and Ashley’s house in Braintree. It was here I met up with Caitlyn, her maid of honour Tamara, and her bridesmaids Zoe, Jenny and Kirsten also present were her mum and dad. A pretty full house and there was a real buzz of excitement (and girlie laughter) going on.

Whilst here we captured some great detail shots of the dress, shoes. Flowers and jewellery but also some wonderful window light portraits of Caitlyn…. and well actually of everyone else as well.

Beautiful wedding flowers Follow Me on Pinterest

Caitlyn and Ashley spent a lot of time planning their wedding and paid attention to all the detail, in fact they booked me some 18 – 20 months in advance. They also chose what should have been a beautiful sunny day in the middle of July. However what they could not have foreseen was the wettest English summer on record. It rained for days and days before the wedding and it rained on the big day itself, so badly in fact that the marquee in the garden was flooded out and on the morning of the wedding Ashley, his dad and others spent hour moving everything out and arranging for the floor to be relayed.

They did a great job though and were still down at the church in plenty of time. In fact when I met up with Ashley his best man, John and ushers, Phil, Adam and Mat they looked very smart, very dapper indeed and we captured some great shots as they escorted guests back and forth under an army of black umbrellas.

Caitlyn arrived with her dad and looked absolutely stunning in her wedding dress, much to the delight of all the family and friends who had come to witness this long awaited and very special occasion. She was joined here not only by her bridesmaids but also her delightful flower girl Chloe and her page boy Aiden (what a character he is).

The wedding of Emma & Liam from Witham in Essex

About two years ago I photographed the wedding of Emma’s friends Ashlea and Chris at Gosfield Hall. When Ashlea showed Emma her album she absolutely loved it and vowed if she ever got married she was going to book me as her photographer. (Which when I heard about it gave me a lovely warm glow inside ah!)

Well anyway, two years later Emma and her boyfriend Liam decided to get married and…. hey you guessed it they booked me to photograph the wedding.

Emma and Liam are a real down to earth ‘Essex’ couple who live in Witham with their two lovely children. They got married at St Andrews Church in Hatfield Peveral and then went on to the Rivenhall Hotel for their reception.

On the big day itself Emma and her bridesmaids got ready at Emma’s mum and dads house which is also in Witham, it was there that I joined them. There was a real buzz going on, a hive of activity, with people doing hair, people doing make up, lots of chat and laughter and… coffee (yeah!).

Whilst they busied themselves I wondered around the house and got lots of nice detail shots of the wedding dress, bridesmaid’s dresses, children’s clothes, shoes, jewellery and the flowers, which were gorgeous.

It was also a great opportunity to take some photos of everyone getting ready and some portraits of the bride.

From there I then went on to the Church where I met up with Liam together with his best man Kane and the ushers, Ronnie, Declan and Louis. I think it’s fair to say Liam was feeling a little bit nervous but there was a good sense of humour amongst them all and his friends were definitely helping to keep him calm.

The bridal party arrived at the church in style, in two stretched limousines beholding a display of beautiful white and pink dresses, Emma’s dress was gorgeous and she looked absolutely amazing.

It was a very traditional ceremony which ran very smoothly and Emma and Liam were both brilliant. Everyone was very keen to congratulate the happy couple and shower them in confetti once we got outside and after a few formal group shots it was on to the Rivenhall Hotel for drinks and reception.

The rest of the day was very relaxed and great fun, it ran like a dream, reception drinks, wedding breakfast, speeches, chatting with friends and family, playing with the children and of course the first dance.

Emma and Liam were a lovely couple and great fun to work with. We captured some wonderful photographs and they went on to order a Graphi album which they were delighted with, Emma in fact absolutely loves it.

It was a real pleasure for me to photograph the wedding of Jane and Keir at the wonderful venues of Maison Talbooth and La Talbooth both only a short distance from each other in the picturesque village of Dedham in North Essex very close to the Suffolk border. Both delightful buildings and both fantastic venues for beautiful wedding photography.

Jane and keir live in Lowestoft in Suffolk but I had met them at La Talbooth a couple of months earlier to for a pre wedding photo shoot. That went really well and we got some fantastic images, but the weather had been absolutely awful, it had rained incessantly and I was hoping things would be better for the big day itself.

Luckily it was, although we had some rain it didn’t really interfere with any of the shots and it didn’t stop us going outside. I started the day by Photographing Jane together with her bridesmaid, (her sister Jenni), who were both busy, watching TV, drinking tea, eating biscuits and chatting away whilst getting ready at Milsoms Hotel, situated hallway between Maison Talbooth and La Talbooth. (I think they were trying to set a record for the total number of premises that could be used).

This was also a great opportunity to take some detail shots including photographing her wedding dress, jewellery, flowers and shoes.

I then went off to La Talbooth to meet up with Keir and his two sons, Brandon and Callum. Although I had met Keir before I had not met his sons so it was really nice to chat and get to know them. We got some excellent ‘boys’ photo’s around the lawns and building outside and then some really cool portraits in the rather grand interior. They were all a great bunch of lads, up for a laugh and very cool about having their photograph taken.

I then returned to Milsoms to photograph Jane in her dress and also as she was leaving for the wedding ceremony.

It was only a small wedding, just close family and friends about twelve guests in total, but it was such a touching and moving ceremony, I know Keir is actually quite a tough guy but he was the first to shed a tear (or two)

Following the ceremony, I photographed Jane & Keir in the beautiful gardens surrounding the Maison, there are some beautiful views there including views across the surrounding fields and views of St Marys Church at Stratford St Mary in nearby Suffolk.

The rest of the day was brilliant and everything seemed to run very smoothly. We all went on to the La Maison where the gardens were even more beautiful than those at the Maison Talbooth and the lawns even more manicured. It was here that the guests enjoyed a celebratory drink and that we shot the formal group shots.

Jane and Keir were great fun to work with and throughout the day we got some beautiful shots. I particularly like the portraits taken of Jane in her wedding dress, the photos taken during the ceremony itself and the romantic shots of Jane and Keir together outside Maison Talbooth.
