Braintree and Bocking Public Gardens are located close to the Braintree District Council offices in the Causeway in the lovely market town of Braintree in north Essex and it makes an idyllic location for a pre wedding photo shoot. It is a beautiful public gardens with lots of colourful flower beds, magnificent specimen trees, traditional wooden benches a picturesque pond, shelters and lots of different play equipment for children to play on.

It was here that I met up with Helen and Lee one Sunday afternoon a few months ago to do their pre wedding photo shoot. This was a great opportunity for the three of us to get to know each other before their wedding at St Mary’s Church in Bocking later in the year. The day was a beautiful autumn day absolutely glorious, the sun was shining and the leaves on the trees were golden brown and all around was peaceful and calm. A great day to be in rural Essex.

Helen and Lee are an extremely nice couple who also live in Braintree only a fairly short distance away from the gardens. Though I have to say I’m not sure they were too happy with their decision to walk as they were a little warm and glowing when they arrived. Although both a bit self conscious they were also were both really enthusiastic and totally immersed themselves in the photo session. We managed to photograph in a number of different locations and included some nice reflections in the pond and some dramatic shots into the sun. They both said they had fully enjoyed the shoot and were looking forward to seeing the photos. They left the park happy and smiling (and heading straight for the pub). I was looking forward to photographing their wedding later in the year.

‘With over 25 years of bespoke wedding services, Stock Brook Country Club has long been established as the premiere wedding venue in Essex’ Well that’s what it says on their web site anyway and I have absolutely no reason to disbelieve it.

I have to say Stock Brook Manor is an excellent wedding venue, it’s set in over 250 acres of English countryside on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Stock in central Essex and It’s here that I photographed the wedding of Jane and Ben some few weeks ago.

For those of you that follow my blog you will know that I did a pre wedding photo shoot a few weeks ago and that unfortunately Ben was unable to make it on the day. It was therefore a pleasure to meet him for the first time on the wedding day itself.

The day started photographing the bride (Jane) together with her bridesmaids Caroline, Nina, Tracey, Seliha and Izzy (and also Jane’s mum who had come over from Ireland). They were all at Caroline’s house in Shenfield and it’s fair to say that all was in a state of very organised chaos when I arrived, there was a lot going on but everyone seemed to know what they were doing. I even got a cup of coffee, which always goes down well (remember that!).

After photographing the ‘bridal prep’ is was off to Stock Brook Manor to photograph the groom (Ben) together with his best man (men) Jake and Aaron, his two brothers. Like I said before this was the first time I had met Ben and I literally had no idea what he looked like, however we had no problems meeting up and I found him to be a really nice guy.

I photographed Jane when she arrived at the venue and I have to say she looked absolutely stunning in her wedding dress, although the dress was all a bit ‘bundled up’ as she squeezed in to the front seat of her brother in laws Ferrari.

The ceremony itself was lovely and a great opportunity to capture some more beautiful photographs. Following this Jane and Ben held reception drinks whilst they greeted their guests before we set off to photograph a few formal group shots on a beautifully manicured lawn, (I think it’s actually a bowling lawn).

On one of my previous visits to Stock Brook Manor I had seen a fantastic line of trees just along from the main gate; I knew these would be a perfect setting for some beautiful wedding photography and so that’s where I headed next, along with Jane and Ben of course. Only this time Jane had to squeeze her dress into the front of my car (not quite a Ferarri I’m afraid).

The rest of the day was brilliant and everything seemed to run very smoothly. The line up, the wedding breakfast, the wedding speeches, the toast, the cutting of the wedding cake, the casino, the chocolate fountain and finally of course as traditional at every wedding – the first dance and of course I photographed them all.

Jane and Ben are a wonderful couple and they were an absolute joy to work with. I wish them lots of luck and happiness in their life together

I was recently commissioned to take some family portrait photographs to mark a 60th Birthday celebration. However not only was it the ‘mums’ birthday celebration it was also a family reunion as it was a fairly unique opportunity for all the family members to get together all at the same time, people had travelled from across Essex and from as far away as Surrey.
There were 12 people in all, as well as three dogs who wanted to get in on the act. What they wanted was some photographs of all of them together but also some individual family / children shots.
We started with some fairly formal group shots inside before going out in to the garden and doing some more informal fun stuff.

It was a great joy recently for me to photograph the wedding of Emma and Andrew at Castle Hedingham in north Essex.

I started the day by Photographing Emma at her parents’ house in nearby Gosfield, She spent the morning there being pampered and having her hair and makeup done along with her three delightful bridesmaids, Sarah, Nikki and Charlotte. It was great to work in Gosfield because, as you may know it happens to where I live and for me was just a short walk down the road.

The wedding itself was held at St Nicholas’s church in the centre of Castle Hedingham village and it was here that I met up with Andrew, his Best Man Richard and his groomsmen Bob and Adam, to take some photographs before the wedding ceremony. They were all a great bunch of lads, up for a laugh and very cool about having their photograph taken. As a photographer I love it when people are relaxed and natural whilst in front of the camera.

Emma arrived at the church in a vintage wedding car and she looked absolutely fantastic – stunning in fact, in her wedding dress. After a short discussion with the vicar and her bridesmaids outside, her dad, Steve, escorted her in to the church for the start of the wedding ceremony. As you will see from some of the photographs St Nicholas’s is a fantastic old church, very grand, very beautiful and is definitely worth a visit.

Emma and Andrew are a fantastic couple from Sible Hedingham also in Essex and for those of you that follow my blog you will know we did a pre wedding photo shoot, in Castle Hedingham in April this year.

Following the wedding ceremony, the bride and groom mingled with guests and posed for photographs outside the church. They were then driven slowly through the village, followed by the guests, to Hedingham Castle where they held the wedding reception.

The day of the wedding was gorgeous, the sun was shining, the sky was blue and I’m pretty sure the birds were singing too. The gardens at Hedingham castle are fantastic and from their elevated position give a fantastic view of the lake below. It’s a perfect location to take some stunning photographs.

Emma and Andrew were a dream to work with and throughout the day we got some beautiful shots. I particularly like the natural light portraits taken on the bridge in front of the castle and the shots taken using video light on the stairs in the main hall.

I have produced a selection of photographs below –

Essex Wedding Photography

Pre wedding photoshoot with Emma Andrew

Emma and Andrew are a fantastic couple who live in Sible Hedingham north Essex. Their plan is to get married at St Nicholas’s church in nearby Castle Hedingham and then hold their wedding reception at Hedingham Castle. A large fine Norman castle built by Aubrey de Vere ll in 1140. (impressive eh!).

We thought therefore it would be a great fun to do the pre wedding photo shoot in the village of Castle Hedingham and that’s exactly what we did one bright sunny Saturday morning back in April.

North Essex in general is a beautiful rural area; a great place to take photographs and Castle Hedingham is absolutely delightful, a jewel in the crown and one of my favourite villages in the area. (I would fully recommend a visit).

Emma and Andrew were fantastic to work with; they were both relaxed, open and willing to try anything. We shot for about an hour and got some fantastic photographs, I have reproduced a few of these below.

I can’t wait to photograph their wedding!

Essex Family Portrait Photography with Dominic, Jane & Tabitha

It’s great fun being a family portrait photographer. A few weeks ago I was commissioned to shoot some family portrait photographs for a family living at West Mersea in Essex. I have actually photographed Jane (mum) and Tabitha (daughter) before (see here) but this time they were joined by (dad) Dominic.

What they wanted were some outdoor shots of the family having fun together but also a few posed shots, semi formal shots where they would all sit and face towards the camera.

I understand that they (Dominic) had been decorating the lounge and they now wanted a nice big canvas print to put onto the feature wall as well as a number of prints for friends and family.

We started the shoot with a visit to an old harbour area of the island which was fantastic, rugged with lots of boats (new and old) and nice long costal paths. It was quite sunny but also very breezy which added to the outdoor rugged appearance – it also played havoc with Jane and Tabitha’s hair (and mine but that didn’t really matter).

We then moved on to what must be one of the most popular and most photographed areas of the island – the ‘beach huts’. Many costal resorts have beach huts but sadly many are a bit lack lustre, a bit run down and tired looking many in need of repair or a good coat of paint. However I have to say the ones at Mersea are some of the best I have ever seen! All in excellent condition and all recently painted in a range of complimentary colours and they all form one long continues line right on the sea front – very dramatic and well worth a visit.

They loved the photos and are in the process of ordering a number of large canvases and prints.

Here are a few shots from the day.

‘Focus on Imaging’

On Tuesday I ventured north to the National Exhibition Center (NEC) near Birmingham to attend the annual ‘Focus on Imaging’ event. ‘Focus’ as it’s generally referred to is Europe’s biggest annual imaging show, and covers all your needs from image capture through to output and beyond. Whether you are a professional photographer, image maker or processor, a manufacturer or distributor of products or a keen hobbyist, there is something there for everyone and in fact there were well over 200 exhibitors present. Excellent opportunity and temptation to spend lots of money if you wanted to (or if you had it!).

As well as a trade show there are also a number software demonstrations going on from the likes of Adobe, OnOne and Corel etc as well as talks and demonstrations from a number of professional photographers, including wedding photography, portrait photography, commercial photography and landscape and wildlife photography.

I personally enjoyed a number of lectures / demonstrations,

Trevor & Faye Yerbury – Renowned wedding and portrait photographers based in Scotland but who photograph wedding all over the country. They gave an excellent talk and demonstration on studio based portrait photography using only one light and a reflector to produce some brilliant results. Web address http://www.yerburyweddings.co.uk/

Chris Burfoot – Chris is another wedding and portrait photographer but based at the opposite end of the country in Wiltshire. Chris is also well known for running a number of photographic courses for The Flash centre (TFC). He also runs courses for The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) and The Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers (SWPP). On the particular occasion that I saw him Chris was giving a practical demonstration using different printed photographic backgrounds. In particular he had one which contained an image of a brick wall and another a corrugated metal shed / fence. The results were excellent, although photographed in a studio both looked as they could have been taken on location. Chris’s web address is http://www.pembrokephoto.co.uk/

Bjorn Thomassen – Bjorn, who heralds from Cornwall, has won many prestigious awards for his photography, in a diversity of subjects from Commercial to Wedding photography and Contemporary Portraiture including Fine Art. He also holds a Fellowship in Illustrative Photography. Bjorn gave a number of different seminars but during the one I attended he was exhibiting some of his own images and discussing the why and how he came to take them, explaining some of the detailed planning involved and how all of the elements came together to produce the final image. Some his wedding photography is absolutely stunning and I would definitely recommend a visit to his web site, http://www.bjornthomassen.com/

David Noton – Although I am primarily a wedding and portrait photographer I also enjoy other aspects of photography and in particular ‘Landscape’ David Noton is one of my favorite landscape photographers and he also was talking at Focus this year.

David is an award winning landscape and travel photographer with over 24 years experience as a professional under his belt. During his photographic career he has travelled to just about every corner of the Globe and his pictures are now published all over the world. He also writes for a number of magazines and websites including, Practical Photography magazine, Outdoor Photography, Digital Photo Pro and www.photographyblog.com where he has a monthly online column.

At Focus he presented a slide show and then gave a commentary / talk about where the pictures were taken and how they were obtained. As you would expect the images were simply stunning, I would definitely recommend a visit to his site, http://davidnoton.com/

There were lots of other speakers and demonstrations there too but these were just some of my favorites. As well as the trade show and seminars etc there was also an opportunity to photograph a number of models posing in different studio style settings. I have included a few of my shots below – if for no other reason than to give this blog entry a visual reference, also I think they look good, see what you think…

If you follow my blog then you will know that that over the past year I have attended a number of wedding photography training courses run by Braintree photographer Jeff Turnbull, www.jeffturnbull.com. Jeff is an excellent photographer specialising in weddings and portraits but he also runs a number of different photography training courses, ranging from introduction to digital photography through to specialist courses in portrait and wedding photography. Like I said I have attended a number of these in the past, but recently I was flattered that Jeff asked me along to help out. He was running the first module of his wedding training, which included a shoot at ‘All Saints’ church in Rayne near Braintree in Essex.

There were about eight students altogether, who were a great lot. (I have to say I do enjoy the company and banter of other like mined photographers). The day itself was bitterly cold and without a doubt many of us began to feel it. The bride was brilliant though and she must have been made of tougher stuff than the rest of us, as she had on a flimsy wedding dress with bare arms and shoulders!

After the shoot at the church we returned to Jeff’s house for a very delicious lunch before moving on to bride and groom preparation shots, as well as detail shots and the cutting of the cake.

It was great for me to help out and assist others. A chance to use my training, knowledge and experience to help other who are venturing in to the business.

Fun Outdoor Portrait Photography Braintree & Halstead

Although I have labelled this as a ‘portrait shoot’ it was actually photographed using two models. However the style of posing and photography used easily represents that which could be used for an engagement shoot. It would also be ideal for a pre wedding shoot or a very stylish portrait shoot for a boyfriend and girlfriend, husband and wife, partners etc.

The images were all taken during a day spent with Jeff Turnbull (www.jeffturnbull.com) aimed at producing natural light environmental portraiture and all were taken around the Braintree area of Essex.

The two models are the very beautiful Beth, who was absolutely fantastic, I’m sure you will agree she looks stunning in all of her shots and her real life boyfriend, the very dashing Frazer.

If you are interested in having some great portraits of yourself, your family or a loved one then contact me now for further information. People love photographs, so why not include some with your Christmas cards and share them with all your friends and family, or for a very special present arrange to have a large framed print or canvas wrap.

Contact me via my web site at www.tonysalephotography.co.uk or phone me on 01787 474923 for more information. Act now Christmas is getting close and booking are going fast.

Photojournalism Essex|Press Photography.

I was sitting at home a few days ago amidst the recent fall of snow when I received a call from Newsquest Media asking if there was any chance I could get some ‘nice’ snowy images for them, for use in local papers. It was great to be asked and I welcomed the chance to get out and take some photo’s; the only problem was I didn’t get the call until almost 3.00 PM and the light was beginning to fade, on top of that I was due to take my son out at 3.30 (ish). None the less I grabbed my gear and set out in earnest, I had just 45 minutes to see what I could do.

Ideally they wanted pictures with people in them, but I also thought a few local landscapes may look good. I had a quick tour of Halstead and Gosfield and managed to get quite a selection, I have shown some of them below. A total of five images were printed in the Halstead Gazette a few days later.
