Katrina and Mark’s Halstead Wedding.

“To get the full value of joy you must have someone to divide it with.” – Mark Twain”

Mark and Katrina are such a likeable down to earth couple, straight talking and genuine. I joked with Katrina that she had the same name as a hurricane and although not destructive she certainly left her impact wherever she went, a trail of smiles and laughter!  I have not had too many brides who drink beer from a bottle at the wedding breakfast, but it’s her day and her way, that’s who she is and I loved her for it.

Mark too is from the same mould and seemed most relaxed with a fag and a beer in his hand. What a nice surprise it was when they very kindly invited my assistant, Rachael, and I to join them at the wedding breakfast,  we had places set out for us and had a great time chatting to Mark’s sister and her family – taking time out to capture some photographs of course.

Halstead Wedding

Living in nearby Gosfield it’s always a pleasure for me to photograph weddings in Halstead. It’s an area I know well and The Bull Hotel is a great venue, with good beer too.

Halstead also has magnificent public gardens with a traditional band stand a green and beautiful flower beds and so of course it was a natural location to take Katrina and Mark for some early evening photos. I have to say it did take a little planning though, the gardens are usually locked around 7.00 pm however I rang the park keeper a few days beforehand and he very kindly agreed to keep them open a while longer, so – many thanks Jason.

Halstead Public gardens set in rural North Essex is an excellent location for a pre wedding photo shoot. It is a truly beautiful public gardens with lots of colourful flower beds, magnificent specimen trees, traditional wooden benches a picturesque pond and a band stand.

I met up there with Joy and Sam one Saturday morning a few weeks ago to do a pre wedding photo shoot, this was a great opportunity for the three of us to get to know each other before their wedding at Hedingham Castle in a few weeks time. It was one of those glorious days when the sun was shining and all around was peaceful and calm, there was a little cloud cover and all in all it was a great day for photography.

Joy and Sam are a fantastic couple who only live a fairly short distance away on the other side of Halstead. Sam in particular is quite a character with his Mohican haircut, goatee beard and his pierced ears. They were both really enthusiastic and totally immersed themselves in the photo session. After a while we had a few members of the public watching what was going on and I think Joy and Sam really enjoyed the attention.

A selection of some of my favourite images from the day can be seen below. Please do leave a comment if you can.

If you are planning a Hedingham Castle Wedding in the future, and would like to discuss your wedding photography, then please do not hesitate to contact me.

I was recently involved in the organization of a children’s photographic competition. This was a competition aimed a key stage 2 children and was targeted at a number of local schools, in the Halstead area. The competition was jointly organized and supported by the Rotary Club of Halstead, the Halstead Gazette and me, Tony Sale Photography. The theme was ‘Community Spirit’ and entrants were required to submit photographic prints at a minimum size of 7” x5”.

The winner of the competition was Carys Thomas (aged 11) a pupil at St Margaret’s School in Gosfield. Her winning photograph depicts an active market scene in her home town of Coggeshall. Carys said, “I took this picture because the community I live in relies on a market we now have every Thursday morning. It is a busy time when members of the community, old and young come out to buy things and to see each other”.

All of the judges liked the picture because, it had excellent composition and made great use of light and colour. They also liked the way that the picture leads the viewer through the scene from the small child at the front to the shoppers and staff in the middle and through to the man walking along in the background. Overall it depicts a real sense of community life.

Carys was awarded her prize at a special assembly held at St Margaret’s School, it consisted of a winners certificate, £25 cash and a family portrait session with Tony Sale Photography. The prize was awarded by Rotary President Mike Harrington Spier who said, “The standard of entries that were submitted was very very high absolutely superb. I thought Carys’ entry was excellent and she is a very worthy winner”.

I have reproduced Carys picture below along with photographs of her prize presentation by Rotary President Mike Harrington Spier.

I look forward now to honouring the first prize and shooting some family portraits.

In my previous post I exhibited some of the photographs taken during Gemma and Joe’s wedding in St Andrews church in Halstead Essex. Well two days prior to the wedding they had a rehearsal in the same church around 6.30 in the evening. At this time it was dark outside and there was little light inside the church so I used this opportunity to practice some very low light photography and used what little light there was to produce some dramatic and artistic images.

I was very pleased with the results and have produced a selection of the images below.

Please click on individual images to see them in full size

Smeetham Hall Barn Wedding.

Back in February of this year I did a pre wedding shoot with Gemma McCoyd and Joe MacAndrews, both from Ipswich in Suffolk. That shoot took place in the public gardens in Halstead on what was a very cold, windy and showery day.

As I said back then I was due to photograph their wedding later in the year and now that time has finally arrived – well in fact it has been and gone. They actually got married in St Andrews church in Halstead on the 19th March followed by a reception at Smeetham Hall Barn near Sudbury in Suffolk.

This time the weather was completely different, there were blue skies, it was bright and warm and in fact it was probably about the sunniest day of the year so far.

Gemma likes to be different, she likes to stand out, be bold and make a statement and she certainly did this in her choice of bridesmaid dresses. There were three bridesmaids at the wedding, Louise, Jess and Katie and each wore a fluorescent colour of either, yellow, green or pink and the two young flower girls, Ruby and Tia wore bright orange. Also, just to make sure everyone saw them the bridal party walked the 300 – 400 yards from Gemma’s parents home to the church, this being along one of the busiest roads through the town. They looked absolutely fantastic, very spectacular and for part of it they actually walked in the road bringing any traffic to a standstill.

This was the first time I had photographed a wedding inside St Andrews church and I have to say it was beautiful, the décor was very grand and the lighting was fantastic for some excellent natural light wedding photography.

Following the wedding ceremony and a little bit more photography outside the church Gemma and Joe were driven to Smeetham Hall Barn in great style – in an old classic VW Camper Van.

It was at Smeetham Hall that we completed the formal group shots as well as some beautiful wedding portraits of the bride and groom.

Gemma and Joe are a fantastic couple and were a great pleasure to work with. I enjoyed photographing their pre wedding photo shoot and it was an absolute please to be an able to photograph their wedding.

I would just like to congratulate them once more on getting married and wish lots of luck and happiness and a long and successful life together.

Location Portrait Photography in Gosfield

A couple of weeks ago on a fine Saturday morning I went out on a photo shoot with student photographer, Becca Sidhu. Those of you that follow this blog will know that Becca is doing a photography course and has an interest in fashion photography but also enjoys wedding and portrait photography.

On this occasion Becca had arranged for a couple of her friends Emma and Jade to be our models for the day. The plan was to go out on a walk around Gosfield, the village where I live in north Essex and to shoot some outdoor / environmental portraits. We would be using a mixture of natural or ambient light as well as using some off camera flash.

I had done a recce’ earlier in the week to identify some locations we might use, including in front of some old garage doors, around the sports pavilion, in front of the Men’s Club and a number of locations in the nature reserve.

I have to say the morning went really well and we ran out of time long before we ran out of locations or energy. I was a bit concerned at the start though that our shoot was about to be cut short. Whilst photographing outside the garages we were approached by an elderly lady, my immediate thoughts were that she was about to tell us to clear off, however she was in fact after our help. She explained that her husband had collapsed on the kitchen floor and she appeared very concerned. I went off to help not quite knowing what to expect, however, luckily, all was not too bad. He walks with the help of a frame and he had simply fallen over on the kitchen floor and was unable to get back up by himself. Once I had got him back up and into a comfy chair we resumed our shoot.

The weather remained kind to us and we were able to experiment with a number of different camera and lighting setups.

I’m sure I speak on behalf of Becca, as well as myself, in saying a big big ‘thank you’ to Jade and Emma for doing such a fantastic job as models. They have not received any training, in fact I think this is the first time they had done it and they were both absolutely brilliant!

‘Focus on Imaging’

On Tuesday I ventured north to the National Exhibition Center (NEC) near Birmingham to attend the annual ‘Focus on Imaging’ event. ‘Focus’ as it’s generally referred to is Europe’s biggest annual imaging show, and covers all your needs from image capture through to output and beyond. Whether you are a professional photographer, image maker or processor, a manufacturer or distributor of products or a keen hobbyist, there is something there for everyone and in fact there were well over 200 exhibitors present. Excellent opportunity and temptation to spend lots of money if you wanted to (or if you had it!).

As well as a trade show there are also a number software demonstrations going on from the likes of Adobe, OnOne and Corel etc as well as talks and demonstrations from a number of professional photographers, including wedding photography, portrait photography, commercial photography and landscape and wildlife photography.

I personally enjoyed a number of lectures / demonstrations,

Trevor & Faye Yerbury – Renowned wedding and portrait photographers based in Scotland but who photograph wedding all over the country. They gave an excellent talk and demonstration on studio based portrait photography using only one light and a reflector to produce some brilliant results. Web address http://www.yerburyweddings.co.uk/

Chris Burfoot – Chris is another wedding and portrait photographer but based at the opposite end of the country in Wiltshire. Chris is also well known for running a number of photographic courses for The Flash centre (TFC). He also runs courses for The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) and The Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers (SWPP). On the particular occasion that I saw him Chris was giving a practical demonstration using different printed photographic backgrounds. In particular he had one which contained an image of a brick wall and another a corrugated metal shed / fence. The results were excellent, although photographed in a studio both looked as they could have been taken on location. Chris’s web address is http://www.pembrokephoto.co.uk/

Bjorn Thomassen – Bjorn, who heralds from Cornwall, has won many prestigious awards for his photography, in a diversity of subjects from Commercial to Wedding photography and Contemporary Portraiture including Fine Art. He also holds a Fellowship in Illustrative Photography. Bjorn gave a number of different seminars but during the one I attended he was exhibiting some of his own images and discussing the why and how he came to take them, explaining some of the detailed planning involved and how all of the elements came together to produce the final image. Some his wedding photography is absolutely stunning and I would definitely recommend a visit to his web site, http://www.bjornthomassen.com/

David Noton – Although I am primarily a wedding and portrait photographer I also enjoy other aspects of photography and in particular ‘Landscape’ David Noton is one of my favorite landscape photographers and he also was talking at Focus this year.

David is an award winning landscape and travel photographer with over 24 years experience as a professional under his belt. During his photographic career he has travelled to just about every corner of the Globe and his pictures are now published all over the world. He also writes for a number of magazines and websites including, Practical Photography magazine, Outdoor Photography, Digital Photo Pro and www.photographyblog.com where he has a monthly online column.

At Focus he presented a slide show and then gave a commentary / talk about where the pictures were taken and how they were obtained. As you would expect the images were simply stunning, I would definitely recommend a visit to his site, http://davidnoton.com/

There were lots of other speakers and demonstrations there too but these were just some of my favorites. As well as the trade show and seminars etc there was also an opportunity to photograph a number of models posing in different studio style settings. I have included a few of my shots below – if for no other reason than to give this blog entry a visual reference, also I think they look good, see what you think…

Pre Wedding Photo Shoot in Halstead Essex

Later on this year I will be photographing the wedding of Gemma and Joe a really nice really cool couple living in Ipswich. In preparation for that and as part of my wedding photography services we recently completed a pre wedding photo shoot. This was a great opportunity for the three of to get to know each other and for them to feel relaxed in my company and more importantly in front of the camera.

We actually did the session last Saturday 5th February in the public gardens in the charming rural town of Halstead in north Essex. I don’t know if you remember that weekend but it was incredibly windy, it was quite cold and it was threatening rain. We did think about doing an inside studio shoot, but decided outside was best and that we should brave the elements.

I’m really pleased we did, it was great fun. The public gardens were actually quite sheltered so the wind was not too much of a problem. Gemma and Joe were totally relaxed (on the outside at least) and we had an excellent time moving around to different locations and capturing some terrific shots.

There wedding will be in St Andrews church in Halstead followed by a reception at Smeetham Hall Barn in Sudbury Suffolk, I’m very much looking forward to photographing the big day itself.

Wedding Photography at The Bull Hotel Halstead.

I recently photographed the wedding of Sarah and Chris, both of Gosfield in Essex. They have been together about 15 years and have finally decided to ‘tie the knot’. They are a really nice friendly couple and I thoroughly enjoyed photographing their special day. The wedding itself took place in Braintree Registry Office and the wedding reception was held at The Bull Hotel in Halstead.

Although the weather was a bit cold, wet and blustery on the day we still managed to get outside to take most of the photographs. Here is a selection from those taken on the day.
