What a wonderful opportunity to shoot some mother and son, family portrait photographs in my home village of Gosfield in North Essex.

A couple of day ago I photographed Sarah and her two year old son Oakley, on a beautiful sunny autumnal day, walking and playing in the Gosfield nature reserve.

The few days prior to this the weather had been pretty miserable, dull cloudy, cold, raining and windy, you know – yuck! So it was such a pleasure to have some gorgeous autumn sunshine and Sarah & Oakley certainly made the best of it. Feeding the ducks, playing hide and seek rolling around in the fallen leaves and throwing them into the air.

It was certainly a very natural and very relaxed way to take photographs, the whole session was very engaging it was based on playing and having fun and not at all about posing for a bunch of formal or semi-formal portraits.

I have actually photographed Sarah on a previous occasion, she assisted me with a photography project a few years ago when I was photographing and designing some book covers based on The Seven Deadly Sins. I won’t tell you now which sin Sarah represented but I will perhaps show the cover in a later blog post (stayed tuned for more info).

It was a great shoot and we captured some brilliant photos. Sarah enjoyed it so much that she has already booked me for another shoot, this time to include her husband and their other son Blue.

Here are a selection of photo’s below, please feel free to leave a message and tell me what you think or if you would like to book your own portrait session then phone me now on 01787 474923 or contact me via the contact form.

Better still why not give a Portrait Gift Voucher this Christmas a fantastic and meaningful gift for family and friends.

Family portrait photography – all the girls

I love photographing portraits whether it is in the studio, at client’s homes or else lifestyle portraits outside or on location. This particular session was photographed in my home studio.

I was contacted by Natalie, who lives in earls Colne, a few weeks previously, saying that she wanted some portraits taken of her mum, her sister, her daughter and herself and she wanted a mixture with some shots of them all together and some taken individually.

I shot some portraits for Natalie a couple of years back when her daughter Katie was only four, these were a series of portraits of just Katie with her Nan., which were a mix of shots taken in the studio and in the local park. Natalie told me she loved these photos and that’s why she had come back for more. Photographers like everyone else love to hear positive comments about their work and there is no greater compliment than when people recommend you to their friends and family or else when they come back for more.

To be honest I get a lot of my wedding and portrait work through recommendations and it really is fantastic.

The shoot went really well, everyone soon relaxed and got in to it, we did a few set changes we had a chat, we had a laugh, we had a cup of tea and generally everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. Best of all we got some fantastic photo’s Natalie, her mum Julie, sister Georgie and daughter Katie were delighted with the results and have already purchased about 18 different photographs.

For those of you that follow my blog then you may recognse these photo’s from last year. I am actually re posting them as the priginal post has been corrupted. I think they are great photo so – enjoy again.

I was recently approached by two photography students, Becca and Jake, who wished to improve their photographic skills and experience, particularly in relation to portrait photography. Becca, you may remember from a previous blog, she assisted me a couple of months ago with a wedding at Gosfield Hall.

I invited them around to my home studio, along with Becca’s brother, Elliott where we spent a few hours practicing different lighting, posing and shooting techniques. They both thoroughly enjoyed the session (as did I) and both said they had learned a lot from it. I plan to run some further training for them in the new year; meanwhile here are some of the shots that I took on the day.

A few weeks back I was contacted by Sharon who happens to live in the same village as me, Gosfield in north Essex, she wanted some portrait photographs of her and her two teenage daughters. She wanted them to give as a birthday present to her mother, which I thought was a very nice idea.

We were fairly restricted on time, as her mum’s birthday was only a couple of weeks off and both Sharon and her daughters have pretty busy life styles. There were no weekend possibilities and so we had to plump for one evening mid week and to restrict things even more they couldn’t make it until 7.00PM – about the time the natural light disappeared.

None the less we still wanted to do some outdoor shots and it was a great chance to do some off camera flash portrait photography. The plan was to meet at the playing fields in the village where there is a large open sports field and also children’s play park with lots of swings, roundabouts and see saws etc. After that we would head to my home portrait studio and do some nicely controlled well lit studio portrait photography.

I actually got to the playing fields about fifteen minutes early just to have a look around and plan a few shots, but WOW! It would have been so good if Sharon and the girls had been there too, about ten to seven the sun was setting and looked quite stunning as it dropped low in the sky. It would have been great to have photographed them with the sun set as a back drop but as it was they were a few minutes late and the effect had completely gone.

Despite that we still captured some really great portraits

I was recently commissioned by Nexus PR to take some photographs of 2012 Olympic hopeful Ross Davenport at an open water swimming event at Gosfield Lake in the village of Gosfield in north Essex.

The event was a joint event by Gosfield Lake and the charity CORDA with the view of raising funds and awareness of the charity. CORDA is a pioneering charity dedicated to the early diagnosis and treatment of heart disease and stroke.

During the event swimmers received advice and instruction from Ross before taking part in an open water swim of the lake. The event was also supported by Lord and Lady Newton as well as Witham MP Priti Patel and Jenny Jenks from CORDA.

ROSS DAVENPORT won two gold medals at the 2006 Commonwealth games for 200m freestyle and the 4×200 m freestyle relay. In 2006 he won the acclaimed BBC East Midlands Sports Personality of the Year. Ross qualified for Team GB at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in two events and is now looking forward to the 2012 British Olympic Games.

A few weeks ago I was asked by Graham to take to take some portrait photographs of his wife Anne to mark a very special birthday celebration. If I remember rightly she was going to be 50 very soon (but I don’t really like to ask). Graham and Anne are both very slim and athletic and both keep themselves very fit, training in karate several times each week. They have recently returned from living in New Zealand, where they lived for a number of years and are currently staying in the picturesque market town of Braintree in north Essex. They joined me for the morning in my photographic studio in Gosfield only a few miles away. Before diving straight in we spent a few minutes discussing the format of the shoot and the types and styles of photographs we / they wanted to achieve. We decided on a mix of fairly formal studio portraits followed by some more relaxed outdoor portraits in a nearby local park. The shoot went well and we managed to get a wide selection of photographs, I have produced some of these below. A few weeks back I shot a studio photo session at my home based photography studio in Gosfield north Essex. On this occasion I had student photographer Becca Sidhu with me who was looking to develop her portfolio and to learn something about studio portrait photography including lighting and posing techniques. If you follow my blog you will know that Becca has photographed with me before when we photographed models Emma and Jade and produced some exciting environmental portraits on a shoot around Gosfield. You can see those photo here

On this occasion we were photographing model Emma again but this time it was along with her friend Nina. The plan was to shoot some high key portraiture but to also then apply some post production portrait re touching techniques, smoothing skin, enhancing eyes etc. The ultimate goal to was to produce some stunning beauty portraits / fashion style portraits.

The shoot went really well, Emma and Jade were great and really got in to the whole modelling thing, they bought a couple of changes of clothing and were brilliant at posing and following directions, although Nina did occasionally get a fit of the giggles. (But that’s ok it kept us all amused) We worked through a number of different posing and lighting set ups and came away with what I thought were some pretty good portraits.

I have produced a selection of images from the shoot below and will look to add some other at a leter date – stay tuned!

I was recently commissioned to take some family portrait photographs to mark a 60th Birthday celebration. However not only was it the ‘mums’ birthday celebration it was also a family reunion as it was a fairly unique opportunity for all the family members to get together all at the same time, people had travelled from across Essex and from as far away as Surrey.
There were 12 people in all, as well as three dogs who wanted to get in on the act. What they wanted was some photographs of all of them together but also some individual family / children shots.
We started with some fairly formal group shots inside before going out in to the garden and doing some more informal fun stuff.

I was recently involved in the organization of a children’s photographic competition. This was a competition aimed a key stage 2 children and was targeted at a number of local schools, in the Halstead area. The competition was jointly organized and supported by the Rotary Club of Halstead, the Halstead Gazette and me, Tony Sale Photography. The theme was ‘Community Spirit’ and entrants were required to submit photographic prints at a minimum size of 7” x5”.

The winner of the competition was Carys Thomas (aged 11) a pupil at St Margaret’s School in Gosfield. Her winning photograph depicts an active market scene in her home town of Coggeshall. Carys said, “I took this picture because the community I live in relies on a market we now have every Thursday morning. It is a busy time when members of the community, old and young come out to buy things and to see each other”.

All of the judges liked the picture because, it had excellent composition and made great use of light and colour. They also liked the way that the picture leads the viewer through the scene from the small child at the front to the shoppers and staff in the middle and through to the man walking along in the background. Overall it depicts a real sense of community life.

Carys was awarded her prize at a special assembly held at St Margaret’s School, it consisted of a winners certificate, £25 cash and a family portrait session with Tony Sale Photography. The prize was awarded by Rotary President Mike Harrington Spier who said, “The standard of entries that were submitted was very very high absolutely superb. I thought Carys’ entry was excellent and she is a very worthy winner”.

I have reproduced Carys picture below along with photographs of her prize presentation by Rotary President Mike Harrington Spier.

I look forward now to honouring the first prize and shooting some family portraits.

It was a great joy recently for me to photograph the wedding of Emma and Andrew at Castle Hedingham in north Essex.

I started the day by Photographing Emma at her parents’ house in nearby Gosfield, She spent the morning there being pampered and having her hair and makeup done along with her three delightful bridesmaids, Sarah, Nikki and Charlotte. It was great to work in Gosfield because, as you may know it happens to where I live and for me was just a short walk down the road.

The wedding itself was held at St Nicholas’s church in the centre of Castle Hedingham village and it was here that I met up with Andrew, his Best Man Richard and his groomsmen Bob and Adam, to take some photographs before the wedding ceremony. They were all a great bunch of lads, up for a laugh and very cool about having their photograph taken. As a photographer I love it when people are relaxed and natural whilst in front of the camera.

Emma arrived at the church in a vintage wedding car and she looked absolutely fantastic – stunning in fact, in her wedding dress. After a short discussion with the vicar and her bridesmaids outside, her dad, Steve, escorted her in to the church for the start of the wedding ceremony. As you will see from some of the photographs St Nicholas’s is a fantastic old church, very grand, very beautiful and is definitely worth a visit.

Emma and Andrew are a fantastic couple from Sible Hedingham also in Essex and for those of you that follow my blog you will know we did a pre wedding photo shoot, in Castle Hedingham in April this year.

Following the wedding ceremony, the bride and groom mingled with guests and posed for photographs outside the church. They were then driven slowly through the village, followed by the guests, to Hedingham Castle where they held the wedding reception.

The day of the wedding was gorgeous, the sun was shining, the sky was blue and I’m pretty sure the birds were singing too. The gardens at Hedingham castle are fantastic and from their elevated position give a fantastic view of the lake below. It’s a perfect location to take some stunning photographs.

Emma and Andrew were a dream to work with and throughout the day we got some beautiful shots. I particularly like the natural light portraits taken on the bridge in front of the castle and the shots taken using video light on the stairs in the main hall.

I have produced a selection of photographs below –

Location Portrait Photography in Gosfield

A couple of weeks ago on a fine Saturday morning I went out on a photo shoot with student photographer, Becca Sidhu. Those of you that follow this blog will know that Becca is doing a photography course and has an interest in fashion photography but also enjoys wedding and portrait photography.

On this occasion Becca had arranged for a couple of her friends Emma and Jade to be our models for the day. The plan was to go out on a walk around Gosfield, the village where I live in north Essex and to shoot some outdoor / environmental portraits. We would be using a mixture of natural or ambient light as well as using some off camera flash.

I had done a recce’ earlier in the week to identify some locations we might use, including in front of some old garage doors, around the sports pavilion, in front of the Men’s Club and a number of locations in the nature reserve.

I have to say the morning went really well and we ran out of time long before we ran out of locations or energy. I was a bit concerned at the start though that our shoot was about to be cut short. Whilst photographing outside the garages we were approached by an elderly lady, my immediate thoughts were that she was about to tell us to clear off, however she was in fact after our help. She explained that her husband had collapsed on the kitchen floor and she appeared very concerned. I went off to help not quite knowing what to expect, however, luckily, all was not too bad. He walks with the help of a frame and he had simply fallen over on the kitchen floor and was unable to get back up by himself. Once I had got him back up and into a comfy chair we resumed our shoot.

The weather remained kind to us and we were able to experiment with a number of different camera and lighting setups.

I’m sure I speak on behalf of Becca, as well as myself, in saying a big big ‘thank you’ to Jade and Emma for doing such a fantastic job as models. They have not received any training, in fact I think this is the first time they had done it and they were both absolutely brilliant!
