Wedding venue – All Saints’ Church in Stock, Essex

It’s always a huge pleasure to photograph couples weddings and as a wedding photographer I get used to photographing in regular venues and locations, which is nice. Some of my favourites include, Gosfield Hall, The Fennes, Baddow Park, Dove Barn, The White Hart, Parklands and Braintree Town Hall.

However it’s also nice to photograph at new locations and I have a number of these coming up this year

One of those is at All Saints’ Church in Stock; I’m looking forward to photographing Cassandra and Edwards wedding there this summer. If I haven’t photographed at a particular venue before then I always like to visit it beforehand to make sure I’m familiar with the premises and local area. (Part of being a good photographer is preparation and planning).

I was really impressed with All Saints’; in fairness I am fairly familiar with the location and have driven past the church on numerous occasions but have never actually been there. So I was looking forward to my visit. I was met there by Father Steven Need, who will be conducting the wedding on the day. He was a really nice guy and we had a good chat about the layout of the church, the procedure on the day and the best vantage points to photograph the wedding.

It’s a beautiful looking church both inside and out and now I’m even more excited about photographing the big day.

Parklands Weddings

It’s always nice when your work is appreciated and shared so it was wonderful therefore to see that Parklands at Quendon Hall have recently posted photos from Holly and Chris’s winter wedding on to their Pinterest Board. I have also reproduced a number of other images from the wedding below.

Parklands, I have to say is one of my favourite wedding venues, (and I’m not just saying that because they shared my photos!) not only do they offer a superb location for the bride and groom but also a fantastic venue for wedding photography as well.

What’s so good from a client and photographic point of view? Well, to start with an amazing staircase, a beautiful bridal suite with four poster bed, romantic alcoves and a chaise lounge, and a wonderful rich décor throughout. All of that as well as a top class dining room in which they serve a sumptuous wedding breakfast.

Outside too they have fascinating lawns and gardens as well the most stunning fountain and walkways.

Parklands are currently promoting a number of special offers including an ‘Offer Of The Month and an ‘Early Bird Special Offer’ do check them out on their web site. if you are planning on gettting married then do check out this amazing venue.

Gaby and Tom’s wedding at their home in Fyfield.

Just wanted to share with you a wonderful wedding I photographed in Fyfield north Essex last summer.

Sometimes, after I have photographed a wedding and I’m driving back home, I find myself thinking back to particular moments in the day that have made an impression on me.

Tom, I had noticed was a little quiet, perhaps even a little reserved, Gabby on the other hand appeared more confident and very much out there. What I couldn’t help but notice was how good they were together, how well they complimented each other; it was as if they were meant to be. When they were with each other the love just shone through, it was clear they shared a very special bond.

The wedding ceremony was held in St Nicholas’s Church, in Fyfield, just a short walk across the fields from their home, it’s a beautiful church, it was a beautiful day, a beautiful wedding and Gabby looked absolutely stunning in her wedding dress.

Following the ceremony it was just a short walk back to home to the amazing gardens and marquee set up in the garden.

Thank you Gabby and Tom for allowing me to photograph your wedding, I wish a long and happy life together.

Portrait photography – Rev John Blore St Andrew’s Church Halstead.

I was recently asked to take some portrait photographs of the Rev John Blore who was retiring from his role at St Andrews Church in Halstead. I have known John for a number of years and in fact he has conducted a number of weddings at the church when I have been the photographer, he’s a really nice guy.

John was not just retiring from the church; he was also retiring from the ministry altogether, so it was a major turning point in his life. It was probably a few weeks before he retired that he realised that during all the years he had been in his role he hadn’t really got many, if any, photographs of himself. Hence he asked me if I could take some to mark the occasion and also to remind him of the memorable times he had spent at Halstead.

We met at the church one weekday morning and worked together to produce a small selection / collection of different images incorporating different aspects of the church. Some taken outside in natural light and others inside more dramatic portraits enhanced by a touch of off camera flash.

John has now retired and moved to live in rural Norfolk, together with his collection of portraits of course; I wish him and his wife, Jane a long and happy retirement.

Wedding Ceremony: Why does the bride always stand to the left of the groom.

It is customary for the bride to stand to the left of the groom during the wedding ceremony, but why is this the case? The tradition actually stems from Anglo-Saxon times,  the old days of “marriage by capture”, when the groom needed to leave his right hand, his sword hand, free in the event that he should need to protect his bride from competitors  or others who may try to whisk her away at the last minute. Back then it was common for brides to have been ‘stolen’ from their families, meaning it was often her own relatives who were ‘invading’ the wedding to take her back.

Wedding Photography_Tony Sale Photography_001 Follow Me on Pinterest

The Best Man, who traditionally stands to the right of the groom, would also keep his hand on his sword ready to fend off trouble and protect the couple. Often during these times, the best Swordsman in the area was chosen as the Best Man. See my previous post, ‘Why do weddings have a best man?’

Wedding Photography_Tony Sale Photography_002 Follow Me on Pinterest

Most couples today still choose to stand with the groom on the right and bride to his left this is most  probably because ‘it’s just how it is ‘and they haven’t really given it much thought. If you wanted to change things though then I’m sure you would be free to stand on whichever side you like, whichever side makes you feel most comfortable. Though if you were having a religious ceremony you would need to consider that changing your positions at the altar didn’t go against the beliefs of your church in any way.

Wedding Photography_Tony Sale Photography_003 Follow Me on Pinterest

One of the other reasons given for the groom to always be on the right is a little more controversial and is seated in religious beliefs. The right hand side is considered a position of privilege and power. (i.e. Jesus is “seated” at the right side of God”.) Indeed at one time In churches, women were also separated from men in seating arrangement, left pews for women and right for men  for the same reason. Though I have to say that in all churches I have been in this no longer seems to be the case and both men and women sit in pews on either side.

Wedding Photography_Tony Sale Photography_004 Follow Me on Pinterest

Finally one of the more humours reasons I discovered (perhaps a little tongue in cheek) was this ‘most people are right foot dominate. The reason why the bride stands on the left and the groom on the right, is so it is easier for her to trip him up if he tries to makes a run for it.’

Brainwave event at the House of Commons.

Last Wednesday I was invited along to take some photographs at a charity event at the House of Commons. The event was on behalf of Brainwave and was being hosted by David Mowat MP. It was primarily an evening to thank those individuals and organisations who have raised funds and supported Brainwave over the years. There were some fine drinks to be drunk and some very tasty canapés to eat but also there were several short speeches and a very emotional input from the father of one of the children who receives Brainwave’s support.

The actual evening was held in the Terrace Pavilion within the House of Commons which sits right alongside the bank of the Thames and with a fantastic view across to Westminster Bridge and the London Eye.

I haven’t been to the House of Commons for a while so it was nice to go in again and wander through Westminster Hall and along the stunning St Stephen’s Hall as I made my way to the Terrace Pavillion.
