The 2014 Tour de France

The 2014 Tour de France was the 101st edition of the Tour de France It started on 5 July in Leeds, England and concluded on 27 July in Paris France.

This was the first time the race had started or in fact been run in the UK. I was fortunate enough to see it on day three when it ran from Cambridge to London and passed through various villages close to me in north Essex.

I actually saw it in Wethersfield, my wife and I rode out there in the morning to see it come through around lunchtime. The village and surrounding roads were packed and there was very much a carnival type atmosphere.

Here are a few photos I took on the day.

Prom photos of Jess & Holly

Back in the summer I was asked to take some prom photos of Jess and Holly, both school friends in Braintree who were going to their end of year prom at Tabor School.

Rather than go to the school itself I met up with them at home, well Holly’s home, where they had both planned on getting ready.

Like many young ladies going to proms they had put a lot of care, time and detail into getting ready. Had there hair done, make up applied and had chosen two particularly stunning prom dresses.  I have to say they both looked absolutely fantastic and I think their parents were right to use the opportunity to have some professional photographs taken.

The weather that day was nothing special, in fact it was a bit dull and cloudy and I’m pretty sure it had been raining. None the less a little bit of supplementary lighting (some off camera flash) soon rectified that.

We used a few items of outdoor furniture as props and set up some great photos in the back garden.

I know both Jess & Holly as well as their parents have been extremely pleased with the final images and I have reproduced a few of them below.

Pet Photography

Although I mainly photograph weddings and portraits I do also get asked to photograph people’s pets, which I actually enjoy very much.

This was a King Charles spaniel (I think I have that right) from Earls Colne, it was such a well behaved cute little dog and I managed to get some great photos, this is one of my favourites.

If you have a favourite pet and you would like me to shoot some professional photographic portraits then do get in touch…Do it now whilst your still thinking about it 01787 474923 or use the contact form

Wedding at Dove Barn.

Dove Barn is one of my favourite locations, a beautiful wedding venue set in the grounds of Castling’s Hall in Groton, a small hamlet near Sudbury in Suffolk. It was here that I had the pleasure of photographing Rachel & Roberts wedding.

You may remember I did a blog post about Rachel & Robert’s pre wedding photo shoot sometime back, you can see it here. It’s the closest pre wedding shoot I ever done to the actual wedding, just three days beforehand, Rachel had been ill and so had to cancel an earlier arrangement.

The day actually started by photographing the bridal preparations, this was at Rachel’s mum’s house in Braintree. It was nice to see Rachel again and even nicer to see that she had fully recovered in time to enjoy her big day. It was also a pleasure to meet her bridesmaids, Sarah, Katie and Jessica. You could just tell from the banter between them and the way that they helped each that they were clearly all very good friends with a strong bond between them.

The ‘bridal prep’ gave me oportunity  to capture some individual portraits of  the girls as well as shots of them all together; it was also an opportunity to photograph the weddings dress, bouquet and shoes that Rachel had taken so much time and care to choose for her special day.

From there I went off to Dove Barn where I met with Robert together with his best man Edward and groomsmen Gregory and Steve. Again we spent some time shooting some individual portraits as well as some fun shots together.

The ceremony itself was wonderful,  there was just so much love between them, I’ve never seen a bride before with such beaming smiles interspersed with tears of happiness, so chocked at times she could hardly speak – it was a privilege to be there.

As I said at the beginning Dove Barn is not just a wedding venue, it’s a part of Castling’s Hall, which is an absolutely stunning House set in magnificent grounds with sweeping drives, streams, bridges, lawns. Trees and flower beds – what a place to live! All of these presented some wonderful photographic opportunities and as you can see from the photos we got lots of gorgeous shots of Rachel & Robert as they wandered around.

It was truly a joy to photograph their wedding and to spend time with them on their special day. I know they will be happy together for many years to come. It was also very warming to know how much they appreciated the service that I provided and how overjoyed they were with the photographs. They have since recommended me to two other couples both of whom have booked me to photograph their wedding in 2015, one of these again being at Dove Barn. www.dovebarn.com

Pre wedding photo shoot at Chapel Viaduct

This was the first occasion I had used Chapel Viaduct as a location for a pre wedding photo shoot, though I have driven past it and visited the area many many times.

It’s an excellent location and it just happened to be perfect for my shoot with Nikki and Tim, they live in Colchester, so it’s about mid-way between them and where I live in Gosfield.

We met there around 6.00 in the evening, it was a little cold and it was trying to rain, though it was summer and the sun did keep showing it’s smiling face – hence the T shirts.

I think it’s fair to say that Nikki was more than a little nervous about the shoot and in fact she had cancelled a previous arrangement because had worried so much about it. That is not a problem, and in some ways it’s exactly the reason for having a pre wedding photo shoot.

As I explained to Nikki and Tim, it’s an excellent way to get to know each other and to feel more relaxed in each other’s company, it also gives me opportunity to give them some tips on how to relax and look natural whilst being photographed. That way when we meet again on the wedding day, they are much more likely to see me as a friend, to feel more at ease and enjoy the photographic experience.

I am so pleased that they came along to the shoot at Chapel; Nikki really had been getting herself in worked up for no reason. Although she was a little nervous at first she very quickly relaxed and seemed very much at ease, just look at the photo’s she looks natural pretty relaxed and  she’s really having some fun on that swing, Tim was brilliant too.
