Family Studio portrait photography

A few images from a recent portrait studio session with Neil, Michelle, Chloe and Harrison.

Mum, Michelle, wanted to update their family portraits with some fresh images to frame and display at home and so arranged to come in one Saturday afternoon.

We shot a few on traditional muslin backdrops and then switched to a more modern and stylish grey.

Chloe and Harrison were typical teenage siblings, definitely a bit of rivalry and tension between them, younger brother trying to wind up older sister, I thought it would be nice therefore to get them to have a little ‘hug’ for the camera – Mum loved this shot.

The White hart Hotel in Great Yeldham is an amazing wedding venue set in north Essex and pretty close to the Suffolk border.

I love photographing weddings here, it has a wonderful bridal suite and it also has the ‘Wedding Barn’ a stunning purpose built timber building where they hold the wedding ceremonies  and which also houses a large well lit dining hall.

It was here that I photographed the wedding of Vicky and Wayne, a really lovely couple from nearby Halstead.

I started off by photographing Vicky, her bridesmaids, mum and sister in the bridal suite. Vicky had apparently spent some considerable time (and money) in choosing her shoes so they were all very keen that we got lots of photos of them. She even put them on to pose for a variety of shots

Gorgeous yellow bridesmaids dresses

Vicky’s mum is a florist, she runs  Fleur de Lys a specialist flower shop in Halstead High Street, so as you can imagine she supplied the flowers for the wedding and as you can also imagine they were absolutely gorgeous, I have to say they were perhaps the best wedding bouquets I have ever seen.

I have photographed a few other  wedding lately and I just know when I’m photographing the flowers when they have come from Fleur de Lys, they are always very fresh, colourful and distinctive and when I ask the brides where they have come from – well you guessed it I have always got it right!

The groom and his mates arrive

I had just finished photographing the bridal preparations when I suddenly heard a commotion, out of the window, at the front of the hotel, I assumed the guys must have arrived, and…. sure enough… The A team were here!

Wayne, his best man, Jason and all of the ushers had arrived in an ‘A Team’ van. (You do remember The A team don’t you?)  They were a great bunch of guys, and had were very keen to compete with each other on having the most dramatic or daring exit from van. (Boys will be boys!)

The whole day was fantastic and ran very smoothly, the ceremony was on time and was very touching, full of tears and laughter, the weather was good and they had a nice drinks reception outside before we did the formal group shots and some romantic images of the bride and groom.

I was only booked up to start of the wedding breakfast, but I have spoken with Vicky and Wayne since and I know the rest of the day, just like the first half, was absolutely wonderful.

My aim in photographing a wedding is to capture some beautiful high quality images, to capture all the details which have gone into the preparations for the day as well as capturing the sentiment, fun and excitement of the occasion.  Most of all I love to capture the special moments, the laughs, the smiles and the tears – the expressions of love between the bride and groom.

This is a repost from ‘ and the original post can be read here

I thought it was a very touching and thought provoking post and so wanted to share it with you here.:

There will be no portrait photos in this post.  This letter wasn’t mailed – it was at my doorstep when I got home a couple months ago.  I read it, I cried, and read it again – probably a hundred times by now.  It wasn’t easy to read – and honestly, as much as it validates what I do for a living – I wasn’t sure I was going to share it either.  If you choose to read through the letter, you will know why I’ve finally chosen to share it.

July 2nd, 2011

Jeanine –

Today I am writing for a couple of reasons.  I have some quiet time at the moment and need to get a couple of things off my mind.  I will leave this for my husband to deliver to you when he is ready.

You photographed my wedding, you photographed my first pregnancy and my first baby.  I contacted you awhile back to photograph my 2nd child and family.  After getting prices and realizing I would want all of the pictures as we love your work – I decided against spending $500+ – which is what I normally spend for portraits and prints with you..  Please know it is not because I don’t value your amazing eye, or how much we love the experience.

That week that I decided to NOT do a session with you, this is how I spent some money.

On Sunday I called and cancelled our session.  Monday I went out and got my hair cut ($39+tip), and colored ($65), Thursday I had my nails done ($24), my family went out to dinner at a somewhat expensive restaurant for no particular reason costing us $79 + tip.  This was just 4 days since canceling our session, already totaling over $200 for un necessary things.  My nails only lasted about 2 weeks, my hair is gone, and seven weeks passed when I got the phone call from our doctor.  It was not something I expected and the cancer has spread very quickly.  I will be leaving my husband, my 6 year old girl and my now 2 year old – not by choice.  It is very hard for me to talk about it which is why I need to write you.

I watch your Facebook page and your posts about the value of a photo and if I could give back all of those things that I purchased this few weeks after I cancelled my session with you, knowing what I know now, and have that session, well… I would do it in a heartbeat.

Now my time is done and there are no more chances for me.  The next time someone cancels a session – my wish is that you forward this letter to them.  Time is fragile, it is gone before you know you had it.  If you charged $200 for one print it wouldn’t be enough for what it is actually worth.  I cringe to think that my priorities were a manicure over a memory to pass onto my babies and husband.

My love and thanks for what you have given us from past photos.  I am so sorry that I did not see it as more than paper until now.

A few months back I did some prom photos for Tabor Academy; I have been a bit slow but have now finally got around to putting some on the blog.

The actual shoot was done for the local press, Evening Gazette and Braintree & Witham Times and appeared as a part of a special feature.

It absolutely tipped it down on the night but the students were excellent, they were in good spirits wore some wonderful outfits and we captured some fantastic photos.

I love to photograph proms and do work for the local media; however my speciality is photographing weddings and portraits so if you would like further information about either of these then please visit my main web site at or contact me here
