Engagement Photo Shoot – Thaxted

I recently did a pre wedding photo shoot with Corrine and Adam in Adam’s home town of Thaxted in North Essex.

I love to photograph weddings, to work closely with the bride and groom and to fulfil their wishes by presenting them with beautiful and natural images of their special day.

One of the best ways, I find, of helping to do this is by getting to know them beforehand and making a personal connection with them.  What better way to do that than by way of a pre wedding photo shoot. A chance to get together have a chat (and a laugh) and find out a bit more about each other. I get to find out (if I don’t know already)  how long they have been together how they met, what their hobbies and interests are and how the wedding plans are coming along.

I get a chance to give them some tips on how to pose and how to feel comfortable in front of the camera. All the while they get to know a little more about me, to trust me and feel relaxed in front of my camera. Then on the wedding day itself they feel much more comfortable with me and enjoy the experience of having their wedding photographs taken

I first met Corrine and Adam back in January when they booked me to photograph their wedding and it was really nice to see them again on the evening of the shoot. They were great fun to work with; a really lovely couple and we all had a great couple of hours or so walking around and taking the photographs.

I have included some of the pictures from the photo shoot below.

This phtograph was taken at the entrance to the walled city of Mdina the old capital of Malta.

The history of Mdina goes back for more than 4000 years. In 60 AD according to tradition the Apostle St Paul is said to have lived there after being shipwrecked on the Islands. Furthermore it is said that St. Paul resided inside the grotto known as Fuori le Mura (outside the city walls) now known as St. Paul’s Grotto in Rabat.

At night Mdina is lit by Lamp light and is referred to as “the silent city”. It’s a fascinating place to visit and is known for its timeless atmosphere as well as its cultural and religious treasures.

Mdina has had different names and titles depending on its rulers and its role but its medieval name describe it best - ‘Citta’ Notabile’: the noble city.

It was home then, as now, to Malta’s noble families; some are descendants of the Norman, Sicilian and Spanish overlords who made Mdina their home from the 12th century onwards. Impressive palaces line its narrow, shady streets.

Mdina is one of Europe’s finest examples of an ancient walled city and extraordinary in its mix of medieval and baroque architecture.

As I said this photograph was taken at the entrance to Mdina I hope you like it.

Frances and Martin’s wedding at Our Lady & St John’s Catholic Church in Sudbury.

Not everyone wants a large or lavish wedding, some aim for something a little more modest a little more low key but something which is very significant to them and those close to them. Not everyone wants the bells and whistles wedding photography, with lots of images of the bridal preparation, detail shots, stylish portraits, speeches, dancing, fireworks etc.

That was the case with Frances and Martin, a wonderful couple who were married at Our Lady & St John’s Catholic Church in Sudbury. Both had been married previously and were having a fairly intimate wedding with family and close friends.

When it came to their wedding photography they didn’t want any photographs taken whilst they were getting ready or at the reception, they just wanted images taken at the church and it was an absolute pleasure for me to take the photographs for them.

I met Martin, outside the church, prior to the ceremony, together with his best man / men Gavin and Noel and the groomsmen where we did some individual portraits as well as some fun shots of the ‘boys together’.

When Frances arrived it really was a picture, she arrived in fantastic vintage wedding car ( sorry I’m not good with cars and can’t tell you exactly what it was)  and she looked absolutely amazing in her wedding dress, as did her two daughters, Julie and Sarah who were her bridesmaids.

This was the first time I had photographed a wedding at Our Lady & St John’s Catholic Church and it really was a beautiful church. There was some wonderful light inside and a nice little balcony area which a great place to take some ‘different’ photo’s.

Frances and Martin requested quite a few formal groups shots and the front steps of the church provided an ideal backdrop to take them. I then took some final shots as they left in the car.

Here’s another amazing little story for you. About two months before Frances and Martin’s wedding I met with a couple from Ipswich, Liz & Ollie, who booked me to photograph their wedding in August this year. It was only during conversation that it came out that Liz’s dad was getting married in a two months’ time and guess who her dad turned out to be? None other than Martin, and they had no idea at that time that they had hired me to photograph their wedding. What was also amazing is that whilst chatting with Liz and Ollie I showed them a slide show from a previous wedding, Jade & Dave and it turns out that Liz used to work with Jade some years ago – small world.

This photograph was taken whilst visiting a caffe in Rabat a small town on the outskirts of Mdina the old capital of Malta.

It has undergone a small amount of post production in Photoshop.

It’s a study in the elements of shape, light, colour and texture, elements which were powerful at the time and motivated me to take the photograph.
