Winter Wedding / Christmas Wedding

There really is something very special about photographing wedding during the winter months and especially during the Christmas period. There is something magical about Christmas trees, colourful decorations and roaring fires. I just love photographing weddings at this time of year.

I’m sure you will have seen photos of Holly and Chris before, I did a pre wedding photo shoot with them some months ago, at their home in rural Hertfordshire. We captured some beautiful images as we walked around their garden and the adjoining ancient woods.

They are such a wonderful couple and you can just tell by the way they look at each other and tease each other that they are so deeply in love. They actually met at work some years ago, they were both communications officers working for Essex Police in Braintree. I think it may have been during their deep and meaningful conversations on night shifts that their romance began to blossom. (or so I’m told anyway!)

I’m not sure when exactly but I know they both left the police service and went to live for a number of years in New Zealand, where Holly, amongst other things developed a very keen interest in photography.

They chose an absolutely wonderful venue for their wedding, Parklands, Quendon Hall a 17th century mansion situated on the Essex / Hertfordshire border, very close to the Essex town of Saffron Walden.

It was here that I met them on the morning of the wedding day. I started off photographing Holly together with her mum and bridesmaids Karen and Julie, before going on to see Chris together with his best man (and brother) Andrew, his groomsman Vincent and pageboy Harrison as well as the two dads. (Holly’s dad and Chris’s dad)

I stayed with them and photographed the wedding for the whole day right up to the first dance and it truly was a wonderful experience. I should add that all of the table decorations and flower arrangements were designed and made by Holly and together with the Christmas tree, the decorations and lights it really did make for a very special atmosphere and memorable day. It was a pleasure to share it with them and to provide the photographs that they may treasure forever.

The Societies

Like many wedding and portrait photographers I am extremely enthusiastic about training, developing my knowledge and skills, and also about keeping up to date with what’s happening in the photographic industry.

Last weekend was ‘The Societies’ annual conference and trade show, held at The Hilton Hotel on the Edgware Road and I went along for two whole days. It’s called ‘The Societies’ because it’s made up of a number of different societies representing different genres of photography, my particular strand is The ‘Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers’ or the ‘SWPP’

The first day I went was on the Sunday and it was primarily to look around the trade show, in particular I wanted to look at alternative web / image hosting sites SmugMug and Zenfolio. I have to say both of them are excellent products and the staff there were absolutely brilliant! – I ask a lot of questions and they were very knowledgeable and helpful.

I also had a god look at the GF Smith album stand, where again the guy I spoke to was extremely helpful. It was also interesting to see that one of their sample books was devoted to images of Nikki one of the models I photographed on my training weekend with Denton Photography back at the beginning of December.

It was also on this day that I met with a potential wedding client who is getting married in Hampton Court in August. Pleased to say we had a great chat (and some very nice coffee) and the booking was confirmed. A big thank you to Tasha and Karim.

One of Frank’s images of the model produced within just a few minutes.

In the afternoon I purchased a couple of strip soft boxes for a number of studio lighting projects I have in mind and also spent some time watching demonstrations by legendary Dutch photographer Frank Doorhof, who was quite amazing.

The second day was the Monday and this was a whole day 1000 AM – 4.00 PM with the absolutely brilliant Australian / Greek photographer Jerry Ghionis (one of the top ten wedding photographers in the world). I have to say it was a brilliant day but I nearly didn’t make it, as I drove down the M11 that morning it was snowing heavily and starting to settle, the traffic was crawling along really quite slowly and I was feeling terrible (had a dreadful cough and sore throat). More snow was expected during the day and I thought I may never get home (feeling a bit sorry for myself) On top of that it was a hire car and the low fuel warning light was flashing! (Ughh!). I came very close to just turning round and going back home, but… hey I didn’t, I soldiered on and got there just in time and so glad I did!

Jerry, Jerry Jerry!

Jerry is a very inspirational speaker / photographer and gave significant nuggets of information and advice throughout the day. I learnt a lot, made some (very untidy) notes and came away very inspired to try out a few new things.

A few months back I photographed mother & son Sarah & Oakley on a beautiful sunny day in the Nature reserve in Gosfield. If you didn’t see the post you can view it here, family portrait photography. Well Sarah was so pleased with the results that a few weeks later we returned to take some more photos, this time with dad Jordan and Oakley’s brother Blue.

It was another nice sunny afternoon, though to be honest not quite as sunny as previously. None the less everyone was on good form and up for having fun. Throwing leaves, climbing trees, feeding ducks, jumping, running, and just generally having a great time. Without a doubt we captured some wonderful shots.

Here are a selection of photo’s below, please feel free to leave a message and tell me what you think or if you would like to book your own portrait session then phone me now on 01787 474923 or contact me via the contact form..

Better still why not give a portrait Gift Voucher a fantastic and meaningful gift for family and friends. (Remember Valentine’s Day is coming up).

If you read my blog post Model / Portrait Photography with Caroline (part1) which I’m sure you did! Then you would have been eagerly awaiting part 2, and ‘TaDaa’ here it is.

The first selection of images here were taken in the studio using a variety of different lighting styles. Starting with a very fresh bright look and then moving on to more stylised Hollwoodesque hard lighting. (which I love and I think Caroline modelled and suited perfectly).

The final images were taken in downtown Hull after dark. This was another great opportunity to work with supplementary lighting and creating a dynamic balance between the ambient / background lights and flash, again I love these results.

On the day of the shoot it was bitterly cold and windy and so I just want to say a big thanks to Caroline our model who braved it all and remained totally natural and very professional all day, she is highly recommended.

A big thanks also of course for John and Liz Denton of Denton Photography for their advice and training over the three days

If you read my blog post Portrait Photography – Nikki (part 1) then you will know I spent an excellent few days training with Denton Photography up in Beverley in East Yorkshire, or the East Riding of Yorkshirs as they also like to call it. In that post I did say there would be a part two and well, without further ado, here it is.

Some of these shots’ as previously, have been taken outside with a careful mix of ambient light and flash to bring out the drama of the scene / sky.

Others have been taken in the studio using a variety of lighting and posing techniques. I love the images of Nikki in the red hooded top, hence probably why there is quite a few of them. I couldn’t decide if she looked more, ‘Lady in Red’ or ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ or maybe that should be ‘Little East Riding Hood’ (Terrible I know, sorry about that but couldn’t resist it).
