I was recently commissioned to take some family portrait photographs to mark a 60th Birthday celebration. However not only was it the ‘mums’ birthday celebration it was also a family reunion as it was a fairly unique opportunity for all the family members to get together all at the same time, people had travelled from across Essex and from as far away as Surrey.
There were 12 people in all, as well as three dogs who wanted to get in on the act. What they wanted was some photographs of all of them together but also some individual family / children shots.
We started with some fairly formal group shots inside before going out in to the garden and doing some more informal fun stuff.

A couple of weeks ago I completed a pre wedding photo shoot at Stock Brook Manor located between Bilericay and Stock in Essex.

I have completed a number of pre wedding shoots over the years and all of them are special in their own way, but I have to say this one really was a little bit different than all of the rest – different that is in that only one of the ‘happy couple’ turned up.

Unfortunately and at short notice Ben was unable to make it and rather than cancel Jane came along on her own. Although it seemed a little strange at first, as I had prepared myself to be photographing a couple, we actually had a great shoot.

When I had met Jane previously she told me she didn’t like to be photographed and that she felt awkward in front of the camera. In fact that’s one of the reasons for planning this pre wedding photo shoot, to teach her how to pose and to feel relaxed in front of the camera.

The shoot was a great success, Jane did start off a little apprehensive and a little unsure of herself however she very quickly grew in confidence and towards the end was clearly enjoying it; and we produced some very beautiful very natural portrait shots.

As those of you who follow my blog will know I quite regularly cover events for the children’s charity ‘Brainwave’. They have one of their centres based in Witham, not too far from where I live.

I was recently very privileged to be asked to photograph a very special event for them, this was a Royal visit by their President Her Royal Highness the Countess of Wessex (Sophie). The occasion was to mark the fourth anniversary since the opening of the Witham centre.

It was a very exciting morning with numerous press photographers and television crews eager to capture the action and lots of local and county based dignitaries lined up to be introduced. What was most important of course was that the dedicated staff of Brainwave were present as were a number of the children who benefit from the great work that Brainwave does.

What was nice for me was that no other photographers were allowed in once her Royal Highness arrived, I was the official photographer and was allowed to accompany her throughout the visit. What made things slightly difficult though is that I had to remain at a discreet distance and was not allowed to interact in any way, (hence no calls of ‘Oi Sophie look this way’!). So whilst everyone would have liked a photograph of themselves being introduced this simply wasn’t possible to achieve.

Sophie herself was absolutely brilliant, she took time out to speak with staff and people to whom she was introduced and she was particularly wonderful and very natural when talking to and interacting with the children.

Prior to leaving she gave a short speech and very kindly cut the celebration cake and signed the visitor’s book.

I have produced a selection of images from her visit below.

About Brainwave

Brainwave offers home based therapy to children aged from 6 months -12 years of age who have Development Delay and disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, Down’s Syndrome and Autism. After a two-day Initial Assessment the therapists devise a structured exercise therapy Programme to suit the individual needs of each child. They then show the parents how to do this therapy at home. They also offer advice and support to families in any way they can. Children’s portrait photography – ‘studio portrait photography’’

Kian is going to be two years old very soon and so his mum Abi decided it would be a good time to get some up to date portraits done. Having spent some time discussing her requirements we decided to go for a studio portrait shoot. She wanted a nice set of framed prints for their home and a selection of smaller photographs to give as gifts to relatives and friends.

Kian is a fantastic little boy he is very chatty, very interactive and very inquisitive, just like most two year olds! However like most other two year olds he is also very independent and likes to make up his own mind, especially about where and when he will have his photograph taken. The session therefore was very interactive and very dynamic with constant changes to the photographic location. Many shots were not taken in the studio at all but rather were taken in a nearby armchair (which was carefully positioned to capture some beautiful window light).
