I was recently involved in the organization of a children’s photographic competition. This was a competition aimed a key stage 2 children and was targeted at a number of local schools, in the Halstead area. The competition was jointly organized and supported by the Rotary Club of Halstead, the Halstead Gazette and me, Tony Sale Photography. The theme was ‘Community Spirit’ and entrants were required to submit photographic prints at a minimum size of 7” x5”.

The winner of the competition was Carys Thomas (aged 11) a pupil at St Margaret’s School in Gosfield. Her winning photograph depicts an active market scene in her home town of Coggeshall. Carys said, “I took this picture because the community I live in relies on a market we now have every Thursday morning. It is a busy time when members of the community, old and young come out to buy things and to see each other”.

All of the judges liked the picture because, it had excellent composition and made great use of light and colour. They also liked the way that the picture leads the viewer through the scene from the small child at the front to the shoppers and staff in the middle and through to the man walking along in the background. Overall it depicts a real sense of community life.

Carys was awarded her prize at a special assembly held at St Margaret’s School, it consisted of a winners certificate, £25 cash and a family portrait session with Tony Sale Photography. The prize was awarded by Rotary President Mike Harrington Spier who said, “The standard of entries that were submitted was very very high absolutely superb. I thought Carys’ entry was excellent and she is a very worthy winner”.

I have reproduced Carys picture below along with photographs of her prize presentation by Rotary President Mike Harrington Spier.

I look forward now to honouring the first prize and shooting some family portraits.

A few weeks back I photographed an assignment for the children’s charity Brainwave. The occasion was one of their major fund raising events, ‘A Question of Sport’ Gala Dinner held at the May Fair hotel in London.

This was an exceptional event, extremely well organised and very well attended by sponsors, supporters, friends and families. The evening consisted of a red carpet welcome, a drinks reception a sumptuous three course meal (which I’m pleased to say I got to enjoy as well). Interspersed with a raffle an auction and a number of interactive table games.

The main attraction of course though was the ‘Question of Sport’ contest which featured a number of sporting celebrities, former England Rugby Union player and ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ contestant, Austin Healey, former England cricket player and co host of the radio show ‘Talk Sport’, Ronnie Irani, Hull City footballer George Boateng and former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder John Pratt.

The evening was full on entertainment and fun. It was enjoyed by everyone who went and raised thousands of pounds to support a first class children’s charity, Brainwave.

It was a great joy recently for me to photograph the wedding of Emma and Andrew at Castle Hedingham in north Essex.

I started the day by Photographing Emma at her parents’ house in nearby Gosfield, She spent the morning there being pampered and having her hair and makeup done along with her three delightful bridesmaids, Sarah, Nikki and Charlotte. It was great to work in Gosfield because, as you may know it happens to where I live and for me was just a short walk down the road.

The wedding itself was held at St Nicholas’s church in the centre of Castle Hedingham village and it was here that I met up with Andrew, his Best Man Richard and his groomsmen Bob and Adam, to take some photographs before the wedding ceremony. They were all a great bunch of lads, up for a laugh and very cool about having their photograph taken. As a photographer I love it when people are relaxed and natural whilst in front of the camera.

Emma arrived at the church in a vintage wedding car and she looked absolutely fantastic – stunning in fact, in her wedding dress. After a short discussion with the vicar and her bridesmaids outside, her dad, Steve, escorted her in to the church for the start of the wedding ceremony. As you will see from some of the photographs St Nicholas’s is a fantastic old church, very grand, very beautiful and is definitely worth a visit.

Emma and Andrew are a fantastic couple from Sible Hedingham also in Essex and for those of you that follow my blog you will know we did a pre wedding photo shoot, in Castle Hedingham in April this year.

Following the wedding ceremony, the bride and groom mingled with guests and posed for photographs outside the church. They were then driven slowly through the village, followed by the guests, to Hedingham Castle where they held the wedding reception.

The day of the wedding was gorgeous, the sun was shining, the sky was blue and I’m pretty sure the birds were singing too. The gardens at Hedingham castle are fantastic and from their elevated position give a fantastic view of the lake below. It’s a perfect location to take some stunning photographs.

Emma and Andrew were a dream to work with and throughout the day we got some beautiful shots. I particularly like the natural light portraits taken on the bridge in front of the castle and the shots taken using video light on the stairs in the main hall.

I have produced a selection of photographs below –
